Humble Pie

I'm interested in anyone's comments, thoughts, ideas, etc. about what it means to be humble. I thought I had an idea, but Chapter 2 got me really thinking about it. Are you humble? How do you know if you are humble? Do you have an example of not being humble? Do you have an example of you being humble? (and if you do, does that take the humbleness out of being humble? ) hee hee --- -or is being humble another one of those things that is just a heart issue and a choice? hmmmmmmmmmmm

This is a tough one. Kinda a catch 22. Even when you try to be humble if you think what if there goes the humbleness. My example was I was nominated for Realtor of the Year. I didn't want it because I felt 1. What have I really contributed to the community to really be deserving of this award 2. I don't like being in the spotlight. I enjoy what I do I don't need recognition. But then when they announced the winner alls I could think about was how cool would that be to be picked. I wasn't and boy was I disappointed. Then I read this chapter and there went all my humbleness right out the window as soon as I wanted that award. No matter how I think about being humble we will never be fully humble unless we are totally alone in the world and only relying on the land and God but I am working on it even with the worldly ways going on around me.

Humility-modest sense of one's importance, rank. I wish we had tape recorded Sandy and my conversation because it was a neat logical winding that I do not know if an entry can do justice. We ended up in a spot where as a study we have been before. Which made us laugh. Gratitude and God's fingerprints. After much wrestling Sandy asked how we can show pride in our kids without making them proud and then the light went on. "Every good and perfect gift is from the father above." So when they do well in school, we point out what a great brain God gave them and we are proud that they chose to use it to his glory and the best of their ability. Or in prayer time, thanking God for a healthy body to allow them to accomplish whatever sport they did. Keep pointing them in God's direction and then they will have the proper sense of God and themselves.

Then we carried it over to ourselves. We deserve nothing so all we have is from God and deserves constant thanks (stuff, abilities, talents, opportunities...) If we continually look through this mind set again we'll see God fingerprints but it also keeps our eyes off ourselves.

I was thinking of Kelly's ex. and then I was reminded that we should do all things to the best of our ability to God's glory "All things through him, to Him and for him." Whatever we do should be our best which will at times bring attention to us and then where we give the honor is the issue. I started thinking of Daniel and Joseph (in the old testament), they were brought to power and honor but there focus never left the giver. Even Joseph when he was before Pharoah, the most powerful guy in the world, he said I do not know the meaning of your dream but my God does and He will tell me.

When I think of humble people they are very grateful and kind. They always seem focused on others and bringing out the best in others and God says when we humble ourselves we will be raised up in due time. There will be times of fame and glory and others of invisiblity and true humilty will keep the focus the same either way. That either one is from the hand of God.

The other side of the gratitude coin that we discussed was trust. Truely trusting that what or where God has you is for your best. That he is there and knows what is best and he will take care of all things. Soemtimes pride creeps in when we try to control (or think we're in control or need to be the one in control) when God has it taken care of. Which goes back to looking for His fingerprints and then thanking Him.

So instead of worrying whether we are humble we need to make sure we are trusting God and thanking Him and the humble part will naturally come because as Webter's says we'll have a proper sense of our importance and role.

I am going to put couple of quotes and a poem we looked at in a separate entry that go with this.
